The three phases after surgery
Protection comes first. Tissues are healing, the surgeon's instructions take priority, and the work focuses on pain, swelling and the movements that are permitted. This is the phase where you do little, but you do it right.
Restoring range of motion comes next. The goal is to recover the full joint before the tissues set. Past a certain point, established stiffness takes far longer to release, and that is the most common consequence of starting rehabilitation too late.
The last phase is strengthening and return to activity. It is often cut short because the patient no longer hurts and assumes they are healed. Yet it is the phase that decides whether the shoulder holds up at tennis in six months, or whether the knee tolerates running.
Why starting early changes the outcome
The quality of the surgery sets the potential. Rehabilitation decides how much of it you get back. A repaired rotator cuff left immobile for too long develops stiffness that takes months to undo, when the passive mobilisation allowed in the first days would have prevented it.
Every protocol differs with the surgical technique, tissue quality and your history. Bring your operative report and your surgeon's instructions to the first session: the plan is built from those documents.
What to expect
One-to-one sessions, without your attention shared with three other patients. A written assessment at the start and regular reviews. Home exercises, few in number and properly explained, because they do most of the work between appointments.
Frequently asked questions
When should rehabilitation start after surgery?
As soon as your surgeon allows, often within days. For most shoulder and knee procedures, waiting several weeks makes range of motion markedly harder to recover.
How long does post-surgery rehabilitation take?
From six weeks for a simple arthroscopy to six or nine months for a ligament reconstruction or a joint replacement, with the frequency decreasing through the phases.
Should I bring my operative report?
Yes, along with the prescription and your surgeon's instructions. Those documents determine what is permitted and when.
Are sessions covered by insurance?
It depends on your policy. The clinic can tell you how to submit an approval request.
Where do sessions take place?
At Happiness Clinic, Villa 865A, Jumeirah Street, Umm Suqeim 3, Dubai.
