Why sports rehabilitation is different
An athlete is not only trying to stop hurting. They want the movement, the speed and the confidence they had before the injury. Rehabilitation that stops when the pain stops almost always leaves a strength or control deficit behind, and that deficit is what causes the re-injury a few weeks later.
The work therefore happens in two stages. First settle the injured area and restore its full range. Then reload it, progressively, until it exceeds what your sport actually demands. A distance runner, a padel player and a rider do not face the same forces, and the programme reflects that.
In Dubai, Nicolas Amat follows triathletes, golfers, padel and tennis players, riders, basketball, rugby and football players, amateur and professional. He is a triathlete himself, which changes how training load, race calendars and acceptable trade-offs get discussed.
How treatment unfolds
The first session is an assessment. You describe the injury, how it happened, what you have already tried. Then come mobility, strength and control tests, compared with the healthy side. By the end of that session you know what is affected, what is not, and what the plan is.
The following sessions alternate hands-on work and active exercise. Hands-on work releases tension and restores range. Active work builds what is missing: strength, proprioception, coordination, endurance. Between sessions you leave with two or three precise exercises, not a list of fifteen nobody does.
The pace depends on the injury. A simple ankle sprain often takes five to eight sessions. An anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction needs several months of staged follow-up, in liaison with the surgeon.
When to come in
Pain lasting more than ten days despite rest, swelling that will not settle, a feeling of instability or giving way, a loss of range: these are reasons to be seen. Waiting for it to pass is what turns a simple lesion into a chronic problem.
In the UAE you can see a physiotherapist directly, without a doctor's referral. If the assessment shows something outside the scope of physiotherapy, you are referred to the right specialist.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a referral?
No. Direct access to a physiotherapist is allowed in the United Arab Emirates. If your insurer requires a prescription for reimbursement, ask your doctor for one before the first session.
How many sessions for an ankle sprain?
Five to eight in simple cases, spread over three to six weeks. A severe or recurrent sprain takes longer, especially if proprioception work was skipped during earlier episodes.
Can I keep training during rehabilitation?
Almost always, with adjustments. We rarely stop everything, we substitute. A runner with an Achilles problem can often keep their volume on the bike or in the pool while the tendon is reloaded.
Do you work with Dubai surgeons?
Yes. After an operation the protocol follows your surgeon's instructions, with written updates when needed.
Are sessions in English?
